The book was good but it gets a little confusing.
Greenwood seems to be obsessed with the idea that rampant magical destruction is to great literature as ink is to making marks on paper. In the time that followed, Elminster learned much about magic from Myrjala, reaching the point where he could finish taking his revenge against the evil magelords who had usurped the kingdom.

A relatively light-hearted book when compared to the more violent Elminster in Hellit focuses primarily on the life of one of Elminster’s children, Narnra Shalace.
But at least keep track of your plot, Greenwood. On the world of his birth he’s all but a god, but when an ancient evil banishes him to the depths of the Nine Hells, he’s just another lost soul. Apr 12, Joe rated it it was ok. Overall, I found this quite an enjoyable romp, and am looking forward to some more of the same in the near future. Since Goodreads still doesn’t support audiobook versions, I tried to get as close as possible. My only complaint here is that I would have liked more details about the memories. Elminster, Sage of Shadowdale, Chosen of Mystra, faces his most desperate struggle–to survive, to escape, to cling to his very sanity–and all the forces of the inferno are rallied against him.
The forces of evil tried to rally in Elminster’s absence, but the other Chosen, the Knights of Myth Drannor, and the Elmnster Three held them at bay until he returned. With the present crisis averted, all elimnster calm, but the Shadowmasters had other ideas. Still, I rather enjoyed it as classic Greenwood. It got complicated when the devil’s buddies started showing elminsetr. This last fact is kind of sad, since elmknster whole series is supposed to expose this key character’s centuries of back story.
I’m fine with Elminister being a hairy, sexy beast that only the hottest of scantily clad avatars of magical power can’t help falling in love with. Jun hwll, John rated it did not like it. Bane and Elminster battled, and both were caught up in the spell that Elminster had called upon to dispose of the avatar. He soon realized that he had no taste for killing, and gave it up when he went to become a burglar in the city of Hastarl, the capital of Athalantar.
The rest of the novel moves back and forth between Elminster’s i fragmentary memories and present-time events. Bell eventually finds her way to Marsember and becomes involved in the intrigues of the Cormyrean nation.
