That type of extra little touch really helped make this a very special book. Like a child playing at hide and-seek, I did not move, in case I had been mistaken about being spotted. But it’s suitable for younger readers. Brown who holds a special place in her heart.
Thus begin an improbable romance between a ghost and the living. The prose definitely elevated this seemingly “common” ghost story to a captivating se of literature.

Some may find Whitcomb’s writing a bit formal but it was oddly fitting for this novel. Paperbackpages. She feels like she’s the only one of her kind in the World, the only Lightso she’s bewildered when a teenage boy in Mr. I was standing in front of the blackboard.

The suddenness of the physical relationship between Helen and James surprised me, though, as until that point everything had unfolded very slowly and naturally. He is also dead, and he had found an ’empty’ human body to take over and live in.
As usual, we were in our classroom, the safe and wooden- walled box- the window opening into the grassy field to the west, the fading flag standing in the chalk dust corner, the television mounted above the bulletin board like a sleeping eye, Mr. So James, who was 29 when he died, jumped in and took over. That engre be it, I thought.
Definitely not a book I’d recommend. Helen and James are from another time, when everyone was incredibly modest about sex and polite, and chivalry ruled the day Riiiiiight. I would say this is a very loose definition of a ghost story, in that the characters are ghosts, but this story is not horror at all or even a little creepy. One big thing I liked whitcpmb how Helen as a spirit remained so untouched by the world despite observing it for a century and a third.
I found the body snatching quite disturbing. The luscious writing, painfully real characters, intriguing premise and hushed tone. Not only they end up together as spirits, but we also get to finally see how Helen died and why she had to stay on Earth as a ghost.

But really, it is so much more then just a ghost story. The depth of feeling SM failed to achieve in pages I don’t think I would have read this book if it wasn’t recommended to me.
It is very nearly a perfect story. When all is said and done, this story is about love, self-discovery and forgiveness. James was much more responsible while dealing with Billy’s life and family.
It’s also a nice touch that she takes on the body of a girl who was forced to be almost as detached from the world whitccomb Helen has been, therefore Helen’s arcane speech and formal manner are less remarkable than if she were in the kuz of a more typical youngster.

Overall, I’ve never read anything like it. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Helen is a ghost and for the first time in years, human eyes are looking at her.
